Last week we revealed who we thought are the top 10 of the Most Underrated Bands In The Industry, so, this week we decided to highlight who we thought are the most overrated. Fortunately, we could only manage to think of five, which of course is a good thing after all. But, still there are a few and a couple and here they are...
5. Coming in at number five is Birmingham indie band, Swim Deep. A once highly rated and credited quartet, Swim Deep released their debut singles, 'Honey' and 'King City', with much praise and the hype was high for their forthcoming album. But, in the summer of 2013 when Austin Williams and co's debut album, 'Where The Heaven Are We' was released, we all began to wonder what the hell Swim Deep were doing. It was a tame, lame and not up to the game 46 minutes of music that has since seen the indie group vanish from the face of the Earth. But, still they're loved by many following the release of their debut album and we struggle to understand as to why. Still, we're big fans of both 'King City' and 'Honey' and feel as though if Swim Deep were to replicate these two tracks with any forthcoming material, maybe they'd appear on our underrated list, but, for now, pick up your game lads. Judge for yourself:
4. Following Swim Deep are fellow Birmingham indie quartet, Peace. Not only are they from the same city, they both replicated each other with their demise following each's debut album. Prior to the release of 'In Love', also in the summer of 2013, Peace released their remarkable debut EP, 'Delicious', featuring the much loved and brilliantly engineered cover of Binary Finary's 1998, a track of which we very much so still love today. But then, 'In Love' was released and the indie groups game dropped, once again alike to Swim Deep their debut album was a tame, lame and not up to their game set of tracks. Feauturing some brilliant, pre-released tracks is all 'In Love' had to boast about, the album-only's weren't quite up to scratch to say the least. Which then lead to one of the anti-climax's of the year. But following their debut album, Peace didn't disappear and tried to amend their mistakes. Although, they shouldn't really have bothered. Releasing the alright, 'World Pleasure', and the dreadful 'Money' and 'Lost On Me', Peace then announced their second album, 'Happy People' and it's blinding album cover. One can only hope that the tables turn in terms of the standard of the pre-realeased and the album-only tracks on 'Happy People'. Judge for yourself:
3. Up next is Bastille. Find a band that irritate us more and we'll give you a medal. Fronted by Dan Smith, Bastille are nothing more than a pop band that play their own instruments. Think Coldplay, but worse. Their main 'hit', yeah we know, 'hit', 'Pompeii', is basically just a broken record of 'Oh's', there's pretty much nothing else to it. The same can be said about the band itself, there is nothing to Bastille. They're nothing more than a pop band made big by teenagers thinking they're 'indie' as they've discovered a poor song by a poor band. Probably only a quarter or less of their fans have listened to their debut album, 'Bad Blood', in full and if they were to do so, they'd most likely agree with us. Judge for yourself:
2. Coming in at number two is the morbid and lifeless, Lana Del Ray. Over-hyped to the max with her deathly sounding music from all three of her albums, 'Lana Del Ray', 'Born to Die' and 'Ultraviolence', Del Ray often speaks publically of her fantasy of dying and how she wishes to do so and to us, something doesn't add up. She has made a living off singing dreadfully her dreadful songs and most probably has more money than You, I and all the people you know put together yet she wishes to be dead. Cheer up a bit, love. We watched her set at Glastonbury this year and genuinely nearly fell to sleep, Lana Del Ray is nothing more than an over-hyped depressant. If you need something to get your kids to sleep at night, then we advise buying her latest album. Judge for yourself:
1. We've reached number one in our most overrated list and topping the lot is the yank, newly converted into someone cool to listen to for some bemusing reason, Taylor Swift. Following the release of the pop stars new single, 'Shake It Off', and her new album, '1989', the Taylor hype has been swiftly rising but we're struggling to understand as to why. She's also been rumoured to be headlining Glastonbury, and Michael Eavis is now a fan. What's happening to the World? Let us remind you of her status in the industry, Taylor Swift is defined as a pop star and that is how it should remain. Making a living off terrible tunes that kids that haven't yet reached the hormonal stage love, and fair enough to that. But, Taylor Swift should most definitely not be earning the coverage she is getting from the likes of the NME amongst others and without doubt does not deserve to be headling Glastonbury let alone be rumoured, BST Hyde Park is where we draw the line I should think. Judge for yourself:
Would you agree?
