We chatted with the "brand spanking new duo", GONZO, this week. Based in Aberdeen, GONZO are inspired by the likes of The Wytches and Radiohead and have recently formed a budding relationship with BBC Sound of 2015 nominees, Wolf Alice. Though they're new on the block, the future is looking positive for the heavy, indie duo.
1. Who are Gonzo?
GONZO is a brand-spanking-new duo consisting of members Kyle Robertson-Smith (vocals, drums) and Matthew Lukowski (guitar, vocals). Our music contains loud and fuzzy guitar riffs overlapping a sea of cymbals, although our music does vary a whole lot and you can expect something new and interesting from every song. We met each other in English class at school when we were both around 12/13; it was love at first sight.
2. Who are, musically, your biggest inspirations?
We try not to focus too much on duplicating any one sound but instead find our own unique sound. We do take inspiration from such bands as The Wytches, Big Ups, Modest Mouse, Iceage and this one small band - it's quite an underground band, you may not have heard of them - called Radiohead, and mix it into our own musical aesthetic.
3. You claim to have a budding relationship with Wolf Alice, tell us a little about this?
Kyle's met Wolf Alice 4 times since February of 2014, and over that time gained a more personal relationship with the band. On our last encounter with Wolf Alice, the bassist Theo offered us a bribe to watch a documentary piece called 'Dig!'. In exchange he would help us out with our own band. Since then, Wolf Alice has been following us on Twitter and a staggering 10% of our Instagram followers are Wolf Alice members. We're tight.
4. Where do you see yourselves in 5 years time?
If everything goes well, we will hopefully be preparing for our first headline tour. We hope that at this point our music will bring in enough income to pay for our Super Noodles, microwavable pizzas, a Netflix account so we can watch our favourite shows; Horrid Henry and Drake & Josh anytime, anywhere, and women's faux fur coats.
5. What's next for Gonzo?
We've got a little bit of music up on our SoundCloud already (you should definitely check it out) and we plan on adding more in the not-so-distant future so keep your eyes peeled. The next focal point of our attention will be getting gigs - holla @ us if you want a gig in your living room.
Big thanks to GONZO for the interview.
