Fat White Family - I Am Mark E Smith - Reviewed

The latest outing from the dirty pretenders to the throne of Dystopia holds no less skin crawling menace than usual.

A side ‘I am Mark E Smith’, a staple of their live output for quite some time, holds the usual mix of sleaze and rhythm which pull you into their strange world.

Lias Saoudi manages to imbue even the most ordinary words with innuendo, his voice sometimes sweet, sometimes droning as he works his way through the song, the odd scream of the tortured adding to the asylum chic. The music, like a seventies pop single played a little too slow, is given a sinister definition by the slow, rhythmic hand claps, the slightly discordant guitar and excellent keyboards filling the track with sullen sensuality. Fat White Family are a band you either get, or you don’t see what the fuss is about. If you’re not careful, their music works its way into your brain, playing on loop, adding an unbalanced edge to your day. If you don’t get them, my advice is to run away now. As for the rest of us, it’s too late, so we might as well enjoy the whole black humour of it all, smiling our twisted smiles. If you love the Fat Whites, this is as enjoyable as anything which has gone before, so go for it.

Oh, and remember you should always leave the kettle on…
