This week we chatted with Bromley duo, Grave Diggers Union. A band of whom describe their sound as 'ambient doom pop' and we'd very much agree. Though, their doom is proving popular with a few. Signed to Brock n'Roll records, Grave Diggers Union are to release their new single, 'Down', alongside it's video soon. This is what the two piece had to say.
1. Who are Grave Diggers Union? Grave Diggers Union are us, Nik Brierley (vocals/synth) and Michael Whalley (drums). 2. Where do you take your musical inspiration from? We really like ridiculously heavy droney guitar music, particularly Sunn 0))). It is pretty evil. We don't have guitar lines in our music but we do try and make the basic foundation of our songs sound similar to Sunn 0))). We also kind of like dark 80's synth based music. So we add that kind of stuff to our songs too. 3. How would you describe your sound? We have come to the conclusion that the best description we can think of is 'ambient doom pop'. We're not sure if that's correct or if that's just how we would like to sound. If you take Sunn 0))) and 80's synth music and stick them together then it's probably pretty close to our sound. 4. Where do you see yourselves in 5 years time?
Older, that's for sure. I would like to think we will be selling more albums and selling more tickets for our gigs. We will be more successful without a doubt, or, we probably won't be doing it. If it turns out people don't like our music we definitely won't keep forcing it down people's necks. Too many shit bands plod along bombarding people with Facebook invites and requests, pestering people to buy the CD, pestering people to come to the gigs, blagging promoters for gigs, hounding press for reviews, etc etc. Lots of bands can't make the connection between having to do that and realising that they suck and that they should just stop annoying everyone. Admittedly we are in a position where we are the annoying ones pestering people to do all of the things I mentioned above. But we are still new and have to do that. We have only just released our debut EP and played our first gig 8 days ago. If we are still having to do all that pestering in a few years then it'll be pretty obvious to us that we are shit and that nobody likes us, and that's fine. 5. What's next for Grave Diggers Union? We're gonna release the single and its video from our current EP soon. The video is for the song 'Down'. Then we will be making the video for the first single from our 2nd EP. The EP is fully recorded and ready for release already but we have pretty big plans for the lead singles video. So we'll start working on that soon and we will then release the EP in summer.
