Track of the Week #34 - Blossoms - Cut Me and I'll Bleed

Stockport quintet Blossoms have established a somewhat unique sound since their formation in 2013, described by the band itself as ‘Ethereal Nostalgic Sonance’. This highly pretentious definition would suggest their music is a hazy trip to yesteryear, seen through the eyes of a dreamer. Listen to the glorious synthesiser melodies at the start of new single ‘Cut Me and I’ll Bleed’, and you’ll see that there’s method in the arrogance.

As Tom Ogden’s vocal cleverly commences on the offbeat of the 9th bar, the desire to grow my hair and buy a turtleneck sweater is already strong.

Blossoms’ progression since the online release of ‘Madeleine’ is evident in the craftsmanship behind this track. Its structure is considered and timeless; the music video is as classy as it is trippy. Skilful vocal melodies bring a standard pop drum beat to marvellous life – this is a song that’ll echo in the musical chambers of your mind. The band, who’ve already supported The Courteeners, have been lazily labelled as ‘psych revivalists’, but this band is more than that. Blossoms have captured glamorous elements of urban bohemia while managing to stay fresh through a melodic attitude. This single is sure to find its way through the mass of psych-pop records being released – it has an edge, a sass that is missed in the dreamy splendour of acts such as Temples. Blossoms aren’t just revivalists, they’re here to stay.

As the opener to a triumphant live show, ‘Cut Me and I’ll Bleed’ will undoubtedly go down well on the UK tour Blossoms are set to embark on later this month.
