We caught up with The Trend this week, a band of whom have recently released their new track 'Falling Apart' to great applause. Their gritty, Libertines-esque rawness and edgyiness has proven a hit so far up in their native Scotland. Their new track, 'Falling Apart', appears to be following this trend, if you pardon the pun. It's one of those tracks that holds a message, with this message being that "Britpop isn't dead" and that Scotland wants a bit of it too. It's an effortless piece of music, there appears to be little thought that's gone into it and that seems to have worked out well. Expect big things from this quartet in the future. Here's what they had to say...
1. Who are The Trend?
Ryan (Vocals, Rhythm), Del (Lead), Sean (Bass), John (Drums).
2. Who are your biggest musical influences?
Musically - anything from The Stone Roses through Britpop, but also we're influenced by bands who have a bit of the punk ethos in them and who's lyrics carry a message; The Clash, The Libertines, The Jam, Jesus & Mary Chain, Joy Division.
3. You've recently released a new track, 'Falling Apart', tell us a little about this?
We had been playing the track without vocals in the studio for a while and we wanted something to match the messy riffs and disjointed solo so that's how 'Falling Apart' came about. We wanted to make a track that shows we are purely rock n roll, not "pop punk" or "pop rock" (there's a difference between catchy and pop) which our earlier demos had been described as so we made everything a bit darker, more distorted, and a video that shows the crowds at our gigs are anything but 'pop' music crowds.
4. Where do you see yourselves in 5 years time?
High up on a list of 'biggest musical influences' by a band doing their first interview for RIFFED.
5. What's next for The Trend?
Well we've just played a slot on Glasgow's version of the rock n roll club night 'This Feeling' on the 7th February, so next will be our gig at McHullis in Glasgow on the 20th of this month, then we'll finish recording our EP which will include 'Falling Apart', and play plenty more gigs all over Scotland.
