Sleater-Kinney - A New Wave - Reviewed

Marking the return of a band who have been working on solo projects since 2006, The album, ‘No Cities to Love’, which the track ‘A New Wave’ is taken from, could have ended up sounding dated. Sometimes bands who have already said everything vital they needed to say, make the mistake of returning to the music scene and producing a lack-lustre offering which tarnishes their reputation. If this track is anything to go by, Sleater-Kinney have enough left to say to take them as far as they want to go.

The whole indie-punk sound they have produced on this single is rock-solid. Edgy and dirty enough to please any post-punk addict, the guitars and drums spit out a seamless wall of sound. The vocals have a slightly DEVO/Poly Styrene feel. With a great chorus and vibrant lyrics, this makes you want to move yourself, hit the dance floor, the pit, crowd-surf, everything.

As you’ve guessed, I like it. I like it a lot. It’s about to hit my current play list in the top 5. I’d make them one to watch, but these ladies have been doing this for a good while, and it shows. They know what they’re doing and they do it well. I guess you know you’ve made it when your track video is basically your own episode of The Simpsonsesque ‘Bob’s Burgers’. I never really caught onto this band in their first incarnation. That was a big mistake and not one I’m going to be making a second time.
