Moonlandingz - Sweet Saturn Mine - Reviewed

Already causing quite a buzz in the music press, the collaboration between Fat White Family members Saul and Lias with The Eccentronic Research Council, Moonlandingz, is ready to spit forth its first offering. With the video for ‘Sweet Saturn Mine’ already embedded into people’s psyche, the digital release on March 16th is likely to be a successful affair, raising the profile of both the Moonlandingz collaboration and ERC (who I personally love already).

The track itself is upbeat, with just a little bit of Fat White’s filth to spice up the lyrics. The feel is slightly psycobiily, The Cramps with electronic musings, but less messy, more sinister and contemporary. The mix of synthesizers and guitar/drums produces a bristling, slightly abrasive outpouring, which hits you with an uncompromising wall of sound. Lias’s vocals are complemented by Saul’s adept backing vocals, topping the snappy, rhythmic music perfectly. There has been a lot of love shown for this track already. It is nice to see it is not all about the fact that the Fat Whites, current enfants terrible of the music scene, are involved.

It is an interesting record. It will be forming part of my early 2015 playlist. I liked it, but I wonder if this collaboration is not capable of much, much more. It has whetted my appetite for the forthcoming ERC album and any further Moonlandingz tracks. Can two such excellent bands bring forth truly ecstatic music during this period of symbiosis? I, for one, will be keen to find out.

RIFFED's Rating: 8/10
