He's done it again, for the third time in total and for the second time in three weeks Will Butler has taken our 'Track of the Week' title. This time for his Arcade Fire 'Funeral' style, 'What I Want'.
When I first heard it, I swore Win was singing the vocals, it took a few plays for me to realise that it was genuinely Will. It sounds just like what I expect a bonus track from the Canadians debut 2004 album 'Funeral' would sound like. 'What I Want' is everything I've ever wanted in a track, it's total and utter Will Butler style pandemonium, pieced together with comical lyrics and phrases, it's a total and utter frenzy. It sounds as though Will has taken his mind and let it write some lyrics, play some chords and smash some drums. Within it, Will suggests buying a Pony and cooking it for supper, as he knows a "Great recipe for Pony Macaroni", he also contemplates buying a dog, a fish tank, a jar of squids, a chicken coop and even some allagators. 'What I Want' is an extremely powerful track, one of which with proper lyrics would become a World beater. But, that's Will Butler for you. He's made his worth with Arcade Fire, his solo project is purely for his fun and you can just tell that when he was writing this track, he was having a heck of a ball.
