The Wired - The Leadmill - Reviewed

Almost three months after a memorable night at The Wired’s EP launch at Plug, Sheffield, we got the opportunity to see them again, this time supporting widely popular Sheffield band The SSS at their sold out hometown gig at The Leadmill. Joining The Wired on their support slot was another local band, The Time Sellers who also played the December gig. The Time Sellers were an excellent attribute to the night bringing a sound that’s totally their own, incorporating the sounds of various Sheffield musical legends.

Following The Time Sellers came The Wired, made up of Caleb Smelt, Jacob Beaumont, Richard May and Harris Slater. They were greeted with massive enthusiasm from the Leadmill crowd and wasted no time getting stuck into their set list (made up of: 'Voices', 'Don't Settle For Second', 'If I Could Only Be Sure (Nolan Porter cover)', 'Ageing Youth', 'What Are We Doing With Our Lives?', 'Summer Sun' and 'Critique'). They got everyone going from the start, establishing their brilliant stage presence early on. From their very first song they were met with tonnes of interest from the gig-goers and interacted well with all the fans. The Wired used an intense mix of strong vocals, catchy guitar and solid rhythm lines to make their music truly brilliant and barely played a note wrong all night. The band has a strong, attention grabbing sound reminiscent of many other local bands such as The Crookes, early Arctic Monkeys and Milburn but they still manage to produce a sound which is altogether their own. A highlight of the night was the final track off the band’s recently released EP ‘Don’t Settle For Second’ titled ‘What Are We Doing With Our Lives?’ which has a fantastic, upbeat feel and was seemingly a favourite for other members of the audience, as well as myself. The band has come a long way since we last saw them, as well as being asked to support The SSS, The Wired were recently played on the Yorkshire football club Sheffield Wednesday’s half time playlist to a crowd of well over 19,000 people.
