‘Cocaine Cat’ has a dirge-like quality. Tess Parks has an outstanding, smoky voice providing vocals which are sublime and surreal. The involvement of Anton Newcomb of The Brian Jonestown Massacre is apparent throughout. Musically, the song is moody and holds a sense of impending danger. The quality of the vocals hold ‘Cocaine Cat’ together; the music is understated. The whole piece is somber and low-key. Even the ending is indefinite and dream like. The track as a whole has a wistful, beautifully distracted feel.
‘Cocaine Cat’ is due to be released as part of the special Record Store Day output, and is a track from the forthcoming album ‘Declare Nothing’, which is out in May. If you like this sort of dreamy, trippy music, you will love this. It’s the sort of psychedelia The Brian Jonestown Massacre excel in. I have to be in the right mood for this sort of music, but even I can see this is done to perfection. If smoky psychedelia is your bag, you will relish this paired down sound. Most will have caught the other-worldly output of The Brian Jonestown Massacre before. This collaboration with Tess Parks can only add to the underground psychedelic kudos Anton Newcombe already enjoys.
