Palma Violets - The Welly Club, Hull - Reviewed

Lambeth quartet Palma Violets brought their chaotic 'Danger In The Club' tour to Hull last night, and rather ironically playing at The Welly Club, boy did they 'give it some welly'.

Opening with a new track, 'Secrets', Chilli and co exploded onto the scene with some exuberancy and when welcomed with a chorus of "YORKSHIRE, YORKSHIRE, YORKSHIRE", it was pretty clear that Hull wasn't getting an early night. 'Rattlesnake Highway' followed as the grueling bass tones and symbol smashes that the Violets are praised so highly for began to pick-up pace. 'All The Garden Birds' came next, and for what is a much more tame song compared to other Violets tracks, triumphantly was turned into an explosive anthem, and with the crowd moshing like there was no tomorrow - it was a success. Fast forwading onto 'English Tongue', which is probably my most favourite Violets track, was shredded out in spectacular fashion. Surprisingly enough, the crowd didn't seem to get into this one as much, God only knows why...

'We Found Love' followed, and since it has been around since pre - '180', Palma's fans have had more than enough time to learn this one and didn't it show. It was certainly one of my favourites of the night, they just executed it perfectly. Striding on once again and after a pandemonic rendition of 'Best of Friends', Palma Violets made their way off stage. But it wasn't long and after a few more yell's of Yorkshire, the four-piece emerged once again to perform new single and the title track from their forthcoming second album, 'Danger In The Club' along with the rowdy-choir-instigator, '14'. I have to admit, '14' isn't one of my favourite Palma Violets tracks. It's good, but it's just not my favourite. Though after a blummin' good effort, I think it's up there now. Sam, Chilli, Jeff and Will put in 110% last night, giving the crowd every last ounce of their energy in a rampant and deafening performance. The Violets are certainly a class act, and if you've got some spare pocket money laying around, get yourself a ticket to see them otherwise you'll be missing out on a right treat.
