Although I had heard the name, Findlay were a band I had never seen before, which made their set at Sound City all the more exciting.
Singing with a voice far bigger than her frame, but easily as big as her over-sized sun glasses, Findlay filled the Cargo Stage with sound, indie rock vocals and backing of the highest order. The music had guts and originality, the vocals a throaty rock-excellence. Wowing the crowd with tracks such as ‘Midnight Drive’, with its strong guitars and keyboards, the band obviously went down a storm. Continuing with songs such as the excellent ‘Wolfback', and ‘Rough’ the Manchester songstress and her accomplished band had everything going for them and totally took control of the stage. Findlay has a sophistication and swagger that belies her years and a talent that deserves to be heard on larger stages than this. The set finished with the amazing ‘Off and On’, a track full of atmosphere, with a dreamy psychedelic introduction. Findlay wowed the crowd at Sound City with her smoky voice and on-stage energy and presence. This was a set that deserved all the applause. Definitely an act I hope to catch again.
