Du Blonde - Black Flag - Reviewed

The track starts with some fine slide guitar and dusky rhythms, before the similarly fine vocals kick in. There is a rock vibe here, the guitars are pure rock but the use of short synthesized breaks and slightly skewed, tribal rhythms set this apart from the mainstream. In places, the track has a dirty underbelly, a growling bass line that gives the music more bite.

The music is gutsy, yet accomplished, with a blues/rock base as solid as any I’ve heard. Lyrically, the song is compelling. Beth Jeans Houghton wrings out every nuance possible as she sings, dragging out the last drop of meaning from the words.

Du Blonde, Beth Jeans Houghton and her group, who call usually Newcastle home, are currently on tour. With the energy and slightly sleazy showmanship shown on this track, I could see this as a gig you would be foolish to miss. Having just brought out an album ‘Welcome Back to Milk’ on the Mute label, this song is one of many excellent tracks the band are likely to be performing. Currently getting airplay on the BBC, Du Blonde are on the way up. If like me you prefer your gigs small and intimate, it might be best to catch them soon.
