Introducing.. Scotland based Kanye West, Mike Oldfield and Oasis inspired three-piece Indigo Sunday.
1. Who are Indigo Sunday?
Indigo Sunday are a young band from Perth, Scotland. We (myself, Conall and Jack) formed last summer and have been making our own music ever since. I (David) play drums, and my two best friends Conall and Jack both sing and play guitar and bass respectively. We are all (unfortunately) still in school, and are aged between 14 and 17.
2. How would you describe your sound?
This is a question we are often asked, and often struggle to answer. I asked my dad what he thought our 'sound' was, and he replied with "'Mumford & Sons' on ecstasy", which whilst amusing is probably slightly inaccurate. We see our sound as something which is intentionally difficult to define, and we all have such varied music tastes its almost natural that's the way we are. I listen to Kanye West, Jack is an Oasis superfan, and Conall loves Mike Oldfield - we always were going to end up with something which was hard to pin down, but I don't think we'd want it any other way. Whilst its the genre we're closest to sonically, I wouldn't say we're 'pure' indie-rock, but we're in a nice genre-less space which allows us to be free to create whatever we like. If we want a heavy riff driven song to have a slow jazz breakdown, or an acoustic track with a ritenuto which leads into a reggae-esque finale (see 'Electric Fence' and 'Minty' respectively), then we can.
3. You've recently unveiled your debut EP 'Bees', tell us a little about it?
From the moment we started writing, we were desperate to get in the studio and get our music put down in a tangible and tactile form. 'Bees' is the result of nearly a years worth of songwriting and hard work - to give an idea of the timescale, 'Sirens' was written in November last year, and 'Electric Fence' around a month before we headed to the studio in July. Therefore there were at least 5 or 6 songs we wrote in that time period that didn't make it to the EP, simply because we felt they weren't quite good enough to make the cut. We'd all agree that this almost perfectionistic approach has left us with an end product which we are extremely proud of and couldn't be happier with!
4. Where do you see yourselves in five years time?
Hopefully still recording music and playing shows! Except in bigger studios and much bigger venues. We love doing what we do, and want to keep doing it for as long as people still enjoy hearing us.
5. What's next for Indigo Sunday?
More gigs, more studio time, more experience. Hopefully recording another EP by the end of the year and expanding to playing shows all across Scotland. We're still a relatively new band, and are still experimenting with every aspect of our live shows and songwriting to find the sweet spot that we're happy with. We really have no clear game plan at the moment, just taking opportunities as they come and working hard to write good music.
6. Where can find out/hear more from you?
We're active on Facebook and Soundcloud, where you can stream and download our debut EP 'Bees'.
