I caught up with Lichfield based quartet Cold Ocean Lies this week. The four-piece who describe their sound as "classic indie rock/brit pop with a heavy dreamy grunge influence meets psych" have a new single planned for release in the near future as well as various live dates to come. Introducing... Cold Ocean Lies.
1. Who are Cold Ocean Lies?
Cold Ocean Lies are:
Luke Brickett Haycock -singer and guitarist,
Harry Lehmann - guitarist/ b vocals
Luke Marvin -Drums /b vocals
Arran Bick - Bass guitar
We're from a small city called Lichfield, near Birmingham , which is where we base ourselves.
2. How would you describe your sound?
We always find it pretty tough to pinpoint our sound down to a genre, but if we had to give it a try, classic indie rock/brit pop with a heavy dreamy grunge influence that meets psych. We love sounding big and powerful that's important to the whole Cold Ocean Lies vibe. Have a listen and see what you think would be the best way to do it.
3. Where do you see yourselves in five years time?
We hope to be playing major festivals, world tours with a solid fan base, we will stay true to our roots and help up and coming bands as we know how tough it can be. Five years is a long time, but I guess we just hope we will still be playing and making music cause that's what's important.
4. Who are your biggest influences and inspirations?
We all listen to such different music and draw from loads of different things all the time but I guess as an overall influence it would be Smashing Pumpkins, Radiohead and The Brian Jonestown Massacre. Our tastes change constantly but they are some of the main ones that are always prominent for us.
5. Why did you start a band and what was the aim?
We started initially in January 2013 then a year later Harry joined as our guitarist. We all knew each other through schools and thats how it all came about. Luke BH and Harry have known each other since we were born so it was fitting really the way it panned out. We are from a small city and when you are in a small city with nothing to do you want to break out and starting the band was our way out. Our goal originally was to play gigs and write some amazing songs. After the first few shows we played we knew it was special so our aim then was to get out there and spread the word. Cold Ocean Lies is the most important thing in the world for us, so we have dedicated our lives for it, there's nothing better
6. What's next for Cold Ocean Lies?
We go into October with some dates to carry on promoting the 'Game' that was released earlier this year. This will include a huge headline show on November 13th at The Rainbow in Birmingham plus Twisterella Festival (Middleborough), Independence Festival (Southampton) plus Leeds, Sheffield, Liverpool and more to be announced. We have a new single planned very soon, we are waiting on dates to get into the studio, Its important we work with people who understand our sound and will get the best out of us, we have a person in mind and we need to wait. Then we hope to do a tour to promote the song and continue gigging throughout 2016 including some festivals.
