Pit Ponies - Magnificent Second Occupation - Reviewed

Released this Summer, ‘Magnificent Second Occupation’ remains one of my stand-out albums of 2015. Starting with the ‘Mountains’, a strong opener with the usual Pit Ponies melodies and a chorus that sticks with you, the whole album smacks of quality. Although the lyrics sometimes have a tinge of melancholy and regret, the music is nothing but uplifting. ‘Life Pt. ll’, ‘Country Song’, ‘Quality Goods’ and ‘Take a Shower’ are all really great tracks, but I think ‘Life Pt. l’, ‘Welcome to the Unhappy Bit’ and ‘Chasing Skirt’ are better again, the gusto of Euan Hartley’s vocals really coming to the fore, but never smothering the amazing guitar work of Albert John or Chris OC’s keyboards. If I had to pick the weakest track, it would be ‘Becoming’, still a good track, but not quite as strong as the others.

If you’ve heard the album, you might think there’s been a glaring omission in my review, but I’m just saving the best till last. ‘Furies’ has always been Pit Ponies anthem. It’s a brilliant track I never get sick of listening to. From the intro to the last note, I can’t think of anything that could make it better. I think it’s perfect, beautiful and one of my favourite songs of all time. I was lucky enough to chat to Albert John and Euan Hartley recently. What struck me was their passion and dedication to the music they produce. I think it shows on ‘Magnificent Second Occupation’. All the members of Pit Ponies have brought something very special to life in this band. Chris OC provides some outstanding keyboards, whilst Drew Fillary on bass guitar and Dean Porter on drums bring the whole sound together. I hope ‘Magnificent Second Occupation’ is only the first of many excellent albums to come.
